Defune
Restaurant branding and visual identity

"A brand needs to be infused throughout the companys culture. All of its people, not just its founders, should live and breathe its values and purpose every day."

Defune is the longest-running Japanese restaurant situated in London's West End and has become renowned for offering standout traditional Japanese dishes. They offer traditional Japanese Teppanyaki dining, allowing customers to enjoy a unique experience where specially trained chefs prepare their food at the table.

The restaurant branding was based around the concept of a Defune, a traditional large sailboat that would leave a local village in search of fine goods. The sailboat logo illustration was stylized to mimic zen garden pebbles to reflect the relaxed dining atmosphere. Elsewhere and throughout the restaurant branding utilised a traditional Japanese water textile pattern to reinforce the authenticity and heritage of the cuisine.

The restaurant menus were cloth book-bound and white foil blocked with a paper inlay featuring the undulating Japanese wave pattern. Each menu was colour-coded and branded with its own distinctive illustrative graphic to enable staff to quickly identify each one at a glance.
